Male Steampunk on a Budget: Column by Ame Steamer

I am VERY proud to announce the first entry of a column by my very good friend Ame Steamer! Ame is a newbie like me (we both joined the same day, actually) but he quickly became one of the best dressed men I've seen on the grid- including guys who have been members for years. (Being Italian helped, I think, but still takes a lot of skill! ;) Even more impressive is what he can do with a handful or even zero lindens. Ame will be sharing mens fashion here on a miniscule budget- many times even a completely free look! Each column will have its own theme, and his first is a style very close to Ame's heart- steampunk! Enjoy, and please let us know what you think in the comments!

.: A FALLEN DANDY by Ame Steamer :.

Being a sci-fi- and everything retro- geek, I really love steampunk and
steampunks! Steampunk exists and prospers in SL, here you can fly over
Victorian cities on a steam-powered airship. However, try doing it
without a proper steampunk outfit: it's simply not the same! Then, being
chronically moneyless I had to solve this issue by finding good and cheap
steampunk items. I thought it was impossible, but I was wrong: out there are numerous great finds!

These suits are from Blackopal, in three variants: the green was my St.
Patrick outfit! I couldnt believe they give them for free, as they are
as good as their non free items, and Blackopal is known for having
greatly improved steampunk fashion and you can grab them also in
XstreetSL!

Avatar Bizarre has a stunning- both in number and in quality- collection
of unordinary clothes that every steampunk-geek will love, and as they
are into a lot of gift hunts you can grab a few creations of theirs for
free, if you are willing to become even more shortsighted, you nerd!

A steampunk outfit is not complete without accessories, I know you want
your goggles (steamjunk group gift), boots (free from Duh! - Make him
over hunt prize) bow tie and and top hat (both dollarbies at Caledon
main location).

If you like a less victorian and more western feeling, then my last
finding is perfect for you: a sepia outfit (free from Silent Sparrow but
available at Gnubie) that I paired with a cowboy hat, above.

A mohawk (free from Black Maria) looks always great with a victorian
outfit. Steampunk's not dead!

Great timing, SL

Me in my cowgirl duds on the right, Daisy all covered up by error notices. :(

Where were you when the grind went down? I was at the Vintage Dolls Burlesque Rodeo Night show- the lovely Daisy Ogleby was performing- and CRASH. The screen that popped up on my login showed what lovely time (and pictures) could have been. Sigh.

The New, Hot Look for Spring!

I decided to completely overhaul my look, make it a little sexier and add some KA POW! to it...

Blondes have more fun, amirite? I thought I looked a bit like a cross between Laura Dern and Gumby... a SEXY cross, that is.

Some of you might be scoffing, turning your expensive, fancy skin & shaped noses at my ensemble. I know you fashion hipsters, in your hats and your glasses well-made duds from Pig. To you I say, "a picture says a thousand words"....

Oops! I mean...

Oooooh yeeeah...

Ah ha! Da ladies know what they like- follow my blog and you'll be tackled in clubs in no time flat!

However- whether or not you follow my exquisite taste, in the end it's all about being around ace people and who you are inside. You and your buds can look like a group of rogue freaks escaped from a gender-confused freak show while dancing in a swank joint like The Vault, but if you're having fun...

... even in horrifying manshapes and blang blang shoes... you will rock it.

Wow. Wow. Wow.

Another great episode taping of Fabulous Fashion with Angie Mornington, featuring designer Kouse Singh of Kouse's Sanctum, specializing in medieval and fantasy clothing. The freebie? THIS GORGEOUS DRESS. FOR FREE. I am in love!! It's called Skye in Midnight Rose. My crappy pictures do not do it justice, sadly.

Look at that flowing skirt... *swoons* talk about the slow dance factor!

It's perfect for dancing, it has that flowing kind of skirt that you can almost feel on your skin. Wow. Thank you so much, Kouse Singh! I just went into her store and she has gorgeous gowns that most designers of her talent charge at least double for- I'm talking beautiful ball gowns for $300-$400, I think I have a new addiction...

Detailing on top of dress.

Dress: [K~*~S] A Gift from Kouse's Sanctum for Fabulous Fashion (Sky dress in Midnight Rose)
Hair: ETD Loraine 2 - Chocolate
Jewelry: EarthStones

Man on the Street Thrifty Fashion Profile!

Zac and interviewer eyeing him like a perv. I swear I'm not a perv!! My clothes from Mischief, BTW.

This feature is one of the big reasons I started this blog, and I'm thrilled to bring you the first entry of it. Well-dressed popular bloggers and designers are always pleasant, but what about the well-dressed, unique random person "on the street" in SL? I've always wondered what goes behind the beautiful/unusual outfits, so here I will be featuring those very people that pull it off on a nudget. Please leave a comment and let me know what you think! IM or notecard me in-world at Lila Corith if you would like to be featured.
Zac Stormcrow came to my attention on the Fabulously Free SL group. He was one of the few men in the group (that group chat, anyway) and his knowledge compelled me to ask him to profile him. I was a little nervous asking him this, as I'm pretty sure a straight guy with a fashionable avatar gets swamped. Thankfully he's as kind as he is stylish, and agreed. We met in the park in front of Artilleri, and there I grilled him like a steak.

How would you describe your personal style?
Personally, my sl is played much like my rl. I'm generally happy, optimistic, quite firty and gregarious. I enjoy this little virtual medium because I get to meet with, and exchange, with people from all over the planet.
(Fashion-wise) I try to appear comfortable, yet stylish. I find that a well put together avi is better recieved. In rl, I've always been somethjing of a fashion felon, but here, I've become somewhat metro. One of these days, I'm gonna have to either thank- or trounce- a Linden for infecting me such.

... ladies?

Lila Corith: So has your superfly style here influenced your RL fashion felony at all?
Zac Stormcrow: Actually it has. I'm surprised about that
Lila Corith: How so?
Zac Stormcrow: Well... here it's easy to play with fashion, get good advise, and because there's whole ranges of styles, you get to experiment with personal style. If it looks good here in SL, odds are good, you won't have people frown at you in rl.
What got you into the whole SL freebie fashion thing?
Poverty and being involved with a woman, who wished to not be embarassed by a dude she liked, looked like a newb. ;) She and I remain friends; her style isn't my style, but I took a great deal of advice from her.

What's been your favorite find(s) so far? What are your favorite go-to stores in SL?
I bumped into a couple of designers who have tossed some very cool creations my way. (Wow, must be nice to be a fashionable male in SL! Harumph. ;) I love the creations at Wilsons, B&C, and Bare Rose. KMadd has a free board, which has always been very good, and the hunts from that designer are excellent.

I also know the owner of the JFTG's hunts and those hunts for men, are also outstanding
both have taken me to designers that have some very good stuff on sl.

What's been your biggest "splurge" here so far?
In terms of fashion...probably a tux from Blaze the tux was cheap...something like $400L. Blaze does have periodic 1/2 off sales and most of their creations are transferable, as I recall. The other item was $800L...which just goes to show a man's priorities! (I won't put that item here, but you can probably guess what it is. Tee hee.)

A lot of guys complain about the clothes here, but you seem pretty happy about them!
In terms of freebies and cheapies, most is not great...you have to show discretion, and a willingness to toss crap in the trashcan, lest your inventory become bloated with stuff you wouldn't give away. You also learn to like certain designers...and for the designers out there that do put out quality freebies, thanks. I have gone back and bought full price stuff from designers who have quality designs

So, what is this fabulous ensemble composed of?
The shape is a mod of the full perm Fernando shape...
Skin is the gift from Belleza--Thomas V2 Tan except the skin...Belleza has a for pay group, which I highly recommend. (I joined right after this interview, it's $250 to join but you get two high quality skins right off the bat, and you're set for future free skins.)
Hair is from Bryce --Saul (each hair pack is $200L)
Shirt is the April gift from SF Design--Chambray and comes in a bunch of configurations.
Pants are from SL Second Island-- Cala Marrom Com Cinto
Shoes are from Kalins- found in the MHOH hunt Crossyard (I made the slurl so it takes you right in front of where it's hidden, but you'll still need to cam around a bit so it's not cheating. ;)
Watch was found in a previous hunt
AO is a free ao from Vista
... and I'm also wearing the free version of the mysti-tool

Sunglasses- From the second best freebie place for guys, Maschienwerks.

I put a lot of work and thought into this blog, I just hope there are people out there enjoying it. =/ Will have stories and more "features" coming soon- I think fashion doesn't mean much unless you show how it is "out in the world". Sad news, one of my very favorite designers, Sevenstar Amat (designer of the AMAZING Stitch by Stitch) is leaving Second Life for an unknown amount of time. She was my first designer "crush" in SL, her whimsical, unique and colorful creations made me smile since the first moment I saw them. She said that she started feeling pressure and competition and the fun went out of designing, so I definitely understand why that would make someone run. You will be missed, please hurry back!

On the other side of the coin, my OTHER very favorite store, Vita's Boudoir moved into a beautiful new sim- and gifted members with an AMAZING free dress! Photos taken at Sevenstar's amazing sim.

Dress: Vita's Boudoir Pousse de Printemps
Necklace: ((Crystal line)) Heart Necklace grey set (freebie from Accessory Fair)
Crown: *amato* Candy Flowers Crown FREE!
Hair: Fri.Day Amelia in Anxious Blond

Below is this outfits theme song- for some reason it always reminded me of the designs at Boudoir. :)

Very Vidi Veschi

Outfit(s) Playlist:
The Beatles: Octopus's Garden

Veschi is a freaking lovely store, and the woman who runs/designs it seems even lovelier. Right now she's slashed prices to 50-75% off, INCLUDING fatpacks. Not only that, if you buy any fatpacks marked with a blue star you get entered into a contest to win *everything in the store.* To me, her clothes somehow give me a "comfy luxe" feeling. The materials seem like they would be comfortable as hell while you looked like a dream- who says you have to suffer for fashion? (Ok, maybe tentacles in my hair were the suffering.

Man, I ADORE wearing things I could never wear in 1st life...) The clothes also seem to suit curvy figures and the curves in every figure, and I'm always a big fan of that. Here's a few things I picked up.

Coat: -Veschi- Autumnatic
Pants: -Veschi- Jeanius! Maroon (they also convert into cute shorts!)
Purse: -Veschi- Lemme Borrow Yer Bag Grandma! Gold - Citrus (best. name. ever.)
Eyewear: *Sanu Daydreams Monocle (Spring Bazaar)
Hair: Wot? Hair 018 {blacks}

Shirt: -Veschi- Vintage Parachutey Jacket White

Necklace: Paper Couture Gossamer Bead Necklace

Ok, the hair/hat and going into the gorgeous Homespun put me in SUCH a vintage mood and I adore the jewelry I treated myself to from Paper Couture SO much that I abused them a little more. Here's a look that I guess is kinda retro-prairie-girl-tries-on-her-rich-aunts-jewelry. Yes, most of my outfits have a backstory. =/ Everything is same as up above, except...

The Tings Tings- That's Not My Name

The new I Love Olive hair in Bella (exclusive to the amazing Vita's Boudoir) I got the black and "crazy" shade pack. The gorgeous pink shades finally gave me the perfect thing to pair with an oufit I bought, love, but haven't had to opportunity to do justice to yet...

I actually saw this dress on a model when I was in the shop for a freebie, and she looked so good that she led me to the dress and I had to buy it. So freebies and models really do help sales, shop owners!

Hair: I Love Olive "Bella" hair in Pink Flamingo

Outfit: Rock me Amadeus dress Runway Pink (yes, it comes in other colors for you pink haters!)
Shoes: Shiny Things Sugar Pumps in Rose
Monocle: Sanu Daydreams Monocle (Spring Bazaar)

I saw Kick Ass yesterday, and... well, it kicked ass! An amazing, original film... and Hit Girls sweet purple wigged crimefighting look inspired me to have some fun with my avatar, thus the purple hair. Then I went a little further...

Juice box gives me the powa...

... to boogie!

Look, what good is SL if you can't have wacky fun with it? Wear things you wouldn't/couldn't wear in first life? This is extremely fun to dance in as well, btw. Shake it!
